DOOM MOOD


 A POROUS COLLECTIVE OF ARTISTS AND RESEARCHERS FROM RURAL AND URBAN AREAS, WORKING ACROSS TRADITIONAL AND EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC AND DANCE  //  

DOOM MOOD has been instigated in 2020 by Maud Buckenmeyer & Dorota Michalak - dancers & choreographers who met at HZT in Berlin during their studies. They have bonded around a practice focused on the power, physicality and relationscapes of voice, tangibility and spatiality of sound and improvisation as a space of welcoming ghosts and guests across material, elemental, mythical and cultural spheres.

In 2023, DOOM MOOD extended it’s form, becoming a porous collective bringing together artists and researchers from rural and urban areas, working across traditional and experimental music and dance.

DOOM MOOD organizes residencies, workshops, performative formats, discussions, and community events, often in collaboration with local partners across institutional and bottom-up contexts. We host spaces of collective learning, release and emotional expression, bringing together people of different backgrounds and generations around dance and music practices. 

Our ongoing aim is to support intercultural exchange between peripheral regions, building bridges between artists, researchers, elders, and communities whose knowledge and practices are at risk of disappearing.

We are inspired by cosmologic visions in which “our eyes are ears” (following i.a. Emanuele Coccia’s “metaphysics of mixture” thought through in collaboration with plants), implying the shift of attention from objects and boundaries to fluxes and interdependency, from vision to listening - across somatic, social and political realms.

sonic dances to live through 


It is a body- and community-based artistic research & living archive combining ecosomatics, sonic choreography, folk music and intercultural dialogue; instigated to feel from within the flesh of the world we are part of

Our flesh is drying out. Our flesh is melting away. Our flesh is exploited and extracted. And we keep on breathing. On our map of thoughts, we combine saliva, moist, sweat, tears, drought, fumes, and weather fluxes.

We turn specifically towards traditional folk music practices as critical tools for shaping the futures. We are interested in their cathartic, rebellious and relation-building functions and potentials. We look for the ways of holding on together. It comes from the longing to reconnect to the place, to lived collectivity, to emotions and senses. 

We understand voice and music primarily as an intimate somatic experience. We are interested in the quakes that voice and collective music practices provoke on social and somatic levels:

What is this affective charge between sounding and listening? How does music affect us as sentient social beings and facilitate going through difficult experiences? How does it help us to understand and shape sociality? How does it make us swell out beyond our bodily contours – becoming a boundless community of pulses and flows?

We instigate collective processes of learning ABOUT and WITH selected folk music traditions. We use tools derived from fieldwork understood as a process of becoming and choreographic practices: we focus on the tangibility of sound, deep listening techniques, explore ways and spaces to raise, release and sustain the voice, work with the affective and kinesthetic potential of music, research historical, geopolitical and ecological contexts, and relate to culture as biology. This allows us to explore folk music practices from the perspective of intertwined somatic and social, personal and systemic experiences.
